Calanais: The Standing Stones

"The main stone setting at Calanais is an extraordinary monuument, an ancient centre of power. Within a few kilometres of it are many other ritual sites. Why were they built there?"

Patrick Ashmmore of Historic Scotland carried out archaeological excavations at the main site, on the west coast of Lewis. Calanais: The Standing Stones explores the enigma of these stone alignments, raised by the islanders around 5000 years ago.

The author examines the archaeological evidence from the site and paints a vivid picture of life on the island as it may have been. He looks at antiquarian and modern theories which have attempted to unlock the mysteries of the great Stones and presents a selection of artists' responses inspired by the haunting atmosphere of Calanais.
